Assistive TechnologyThrough its Assistive Technology (AT) team, the Department of Services for the Blind stands ready to help the participant through all stages of the Vocational Rehabilitation (VR) process: from initial training, on-the-job evaluation, training and support, to job retention, if needed. AT also works directly with employers to determine technology needs and other issues that must be addressed prior to hiring a new employee. The world of technology is changing rapidly. Devices and systems to assist people who are blind and visually impaired to access technology are changing constantly as well. The AT team keeps abreast of these changes and the positive effects they can have on the working lives of people who are blind and visually impaired. AT also has low vision experts and devices that may be the answer in many situations. AT also provides opportunities for those not in our VR program to view and learn about assistive technology. Two different technology events are scheduled alternately on a quarterly basis and rotated around the state. Please call toll free at 1-800-552-7103 for information about the following: Tour Day - Designed to expose the general public to assistive technology equipment. Tours are conducted in our Assistive Technology and Low Vision labs located in Seattle and are scheduled by appointment. Vendor Day - Designed to allow for a broader demonstration of assistive technology equipment and software. Vendors are available to demonstrate equipment and to answer questions on the latest access technology. No appointment is necessary. Go back to Employer Handbook Table of Contents |
