Checklist for Looking Your Best at a Job Interview*
In the world of business, appearance is the hallmark of success. This checklist may help you to prepare and evaluate your appearance for an upcoming job interview.
General Well-Being
- Reduce nervousness and anxiety by preparing yourself for the interview day. For example, make sure your interview portfolio is in order and includes, a copy of your résumé, a list of references, identification, certificates, licenses, etc. Practice answering sample interview uestions. Lay out your interview clothes and check them to make sure they are in good condition. Be sure that your travel arrangements will allow you to arrive at the interview site 10 minutes early.
- Get a good night’s sleep.
Grooming and Personal Hygiene
- Take a shower.
- Shampoo your hair.
- Shave.
- Brush your teeth.
- Use a mouthwash.
- Use a deodorant.
- Comb your hair.
- Clean and trim your nails.
- Avoid strong perfumes or colognes.
- Avoid heavy makeup.
- Change into clean undergarments.
Attire
- Wear a conservative outfit – avoid flashy colors or loud fashions.
- Wear an outfit that is suited for the type of work being sought.
- Wear clothes that are clean and without tears, missing buttons, or stains.
- Wear an outfit that is well-coordinated from shoes to shirt to accessories.
- Wear clothes that are wrinkle-free.
- Choose hosiery (e.g. socks or stockings) that are clean, free from holes and runs, and in a neutral color that matches your outfit.
- Wear shoes that are polished and in good condition.
- Avoid excessive jewelry – keep it simple and professional.
Body Language
- Smile.
- Shake hands firmly.
- Maintain eye contact, when appropriate.
- Suare your shoulders. This demonstrates a high energy level.
- Unbutton your coat. This demonstrates openness.
- Sit and stand still and tall – do not fidget, chew fingernails, tap fingers on table top, etc.
Attitude
- Try to stay upbeat, enthusiastic, and motivated.
- Ask uestions that are appropriate.
- Express by your words and actions that you really want the job.
