Working in a Successful Partnership with Your Vocational Rehabilitation Lead CounselorThe Department of Services for the Blind (DSB) is committed to assist you in getting the services you need to reach your employment goals. As a DSB participant, you are working in partnership with your Vocational Rehabilitation (VR) Counselor and have the right to make decisions about vocational rehabilitation services when your decisions:
Several things will help you to create an effective partnership with your VR Counselor. Maintain close contactKeep the counselor up-to-date regarding your progress in the plan, including your performance in school and training, grades, financial aid status, adjustment to blindness, and your progress in job development and the job search. Notify your counselor if you change your residence, mailing address, telephone number, fax number, or e-mail address. Express your ideas, feelings, and concernsMake sure that you inform your counselor of any questions, concerns, or changes in preference you may have regarding your vocational rehabilitation. Talk to your counselor about any significant changes in your life that might affect your plan to go to work. Follow through with activities and agreementsShow up to your scheduled appointments on time, including meetings with your VR counselor, a job developer, or a trainer or instructor from DSB. Attend and participate in your annual case review. Remember, participation and communication are your key responsibilities in your vocational rehabilitation. These responsibilities ensure that you are working in partnership with DSB to receive the services you need to find suitable employment – one that is consistent with your interests, aptitudes, informed choice, and the current labor market.
