Computer Curriculum Level 1

Windows Basic Skills

Goal: The student will become familiar with Windows and be able to navigate using a screenreading program.

  • Be introduced to the concept of the desktop
  • Access the elements of the desktop
  • Navigating among desktop items
  • Accessing the start menu and launching programs and applications
  • Access the elements of the display

Screen Reader Unit

Goal: Student will start to become proficient with navigating with a screen reader (JAWS)

  • Learn basic Windows navigation commands
  • Learn JAWS navigation commands
  • Be able to know the difference between Windows and JAWS navigation commands and be able to apply them
  • Cursor placement
  • Exploring and reading documents

Basic Microsoft Word Unit

Goal: Student will be able to access Word and compose, save, and retrieve basic documents. He will also be able to do basic editing.

  • Open new documents
  • Move among two or more documents
  • Close documents
  • Cursor placement
  • Insert and delete text
  • Select, cut, and copy text
  • Explore menu bar
  • Explore and set fonts to text
  • Save documents to different locations

Benchmark:
After having completed various exercises focusing on these individual tasks, students will be able to compose simple documents and do basic editing. They will also incorporate their navigation and use of screen reader skills to help them edit their documents.

Outlook Express

Goal: Student will be set up with an email account which he will be able to proficiently use.

  • Get an e-mail account established
  • Understand e-mail and how Outlook Express functions in regards to e-mail
  • Send a message
  • Check for and receive messages
  • Reply to a received message
  • Forward a message
  • Deleting messages
  • Learn about the address book
  • Store, edit, and delete addresses
  • Understand difference between individual addresses and group distribution lists
  • Create folders for e-mail
  • Filter messages to different folders
  • Learn about identities

Benchmark:
Once the student knows how Outlook Express works, he'll be able to communicate both personally and professionally via with others via e-mail.

Introduction to the Internet

Goal: Student will become familiar with basic internet use and web page reading.

  • Learn about Internet Explorer
  • Open and launch internet web sites
  • Read basic web pages containing specific information
  • Use screen reader and windows navigation skills to effectively read web page
  • Understand the purpose of a search engine
  • Do a very basic web search

Benchmark:
Student will be able to do basic searches to find web sites that deal with a particular interest of his choice.

Extra Curricular Use

Goal: Student will learn other useful and fun ways of using the computer for both personal growth and pleasure.

  • Student will also learn to apply his knowledge of JAWS to various programs and situations.
  • Explore various text games which require the student to obtain information from JAWS
  • Explore various audio and music programs on the computer
  • Learn about Wav and MIDI files
  • Explore use of a microphone to create wav or voice files on the computer
  • Explore sites of interest and download programs of interests on the net

Computer Curriculum
Level 2

Windows Skills

Goal: The student will add to his knowledge of Windows, taken from the first class.

  • Be introduced to "My Computer"
  • Being introduced to the concepts of folders and difference between files and folders
  • Setting the folder options of "My Computer"
  • Setting and adjusting the view of an individual folder
  • Learn about different file information like size and paths
  • Creating and manipulating folders and documents within folders
  • Selecting, copying, cutting, and pasting documents in folders
  • Renaming icons, documents, and folders
  • Being introduced to Windows Explorer
  • Knowing the similarities and differences of "My Computer" and Windows Explorer.

Benchmarks:
Student can access various programs and documents from the start menu, desktop, my computer, and windows explorer and can create, access, and manipulate files and folders in Windows.

Screenreader Skills

Goal: To be able to configure JAWS to the student's liking.

  • Learn how to change and modify the voices of JAWS
  • Learn to change attributes like pitch, rate, punctuation level, etc.
  • Configure the JAWS dictionary

Benchmarks:
The student will demonstrate the ability to customize JAWS both on the computer he uses and on others in the lab. Student will demonstrate ability to customize the JAWS dictionary to alter pronunciation of mispronounced words.

MS Word Unit

Goal: Student will be able to further edit and maneuver through documents and add to them as well.

  • Learn about and perform spell checking functions in documents
  • Learn about adding attributes to documents
  • Learn about text alignment and document spacing
  • Learn about inserting to documents
  • Learn about the Search and Replace features of MS Word

Benchmarks:
Student can create a document with correct spelling using appropriate formatting.

Internet Skills

Goal: The student will gain further knowledge of navigating the internet and will learn how to better access web pages.

  • Continue to get better at reading basic web pages
  • Learn about frames
  • Learn about forms
  • Learn about features like: Edit fields, Combo boxes, Check boxes, and Radio buttons.
  • Learn about tables
  • Learn about the history list and how to modify it
  • Learn about search engines
  • Learn about specific ways of doing a web search that is specific to a person's needs or wants

Benchmarks:
Student can navigate through various web pages with various features like tables, forms, and other attributes.
Student can successfully access a favorite search engine and conduct specific searches. Student can read and access several different sites to better conduct his searches.

Computer Curriculum
Level 3

Windows Skills

Goal: The student will be able to perform more advanced functions in Windows.

  • Creating shortcuts
  • Creating shortcut keys
  • Accessing the properties of the Start Menu
  • The Recycle Bin
  • The Find Tool
  • The Run Dialogue

Benchmarks:
Student can create shortcuts to programs and documents at least two different ways
Students can access the properties of the start menu and modify them
Student can use the "run" dialog to run programs and web pages
Student can find programs and documents using the Find Tool

MS Word Skills

Goal: Student will be able to perform some more advanced functions within MS Word and documents.

  • Creating an outline
  • Bullets and numbers
  • Adding time and date to documents
  • The Letter Wizard
  • Creating and manipulating autotext
  • Creating a macro

Benchmarks:
Student can write a letter and format it using the letter wizard
Student can create a macro to use in documents
Student can create lists and outlines
