Orientation and Training Center
Shop Curriculum

Goals: Students will learn to identify various hand tools and use them safely for desired tasks. They will also learn to safely operate various power equipment while completing their wooden projects. By developing their manual skills and problem solving techniques, students gain greater self-confidence by accomplishing tasks that are both challenging and functional exercises.

  1. Orientation to Shop
    1. Location of various items in the shop class 1. Work table 2. Radial arm saw 3. Jointer 4. Table saw 5. Sanding planer 6. Drill press 7. Lathe 8. Disk and Belt sander Benchmark: Safely and efficiently locate all tools and equipment in the shop class independently
  2. Use of hand tools:

    1. Rotomatic

      Benchmark: Accurately measure length, width and thickness of 5 boards in varying sizes

    2. Sanders
      1. Identify/differentiate between vibrating and belt sanders
      2. Identify different types and grades of sand paper
      3. Safely and efficiently replace sand paper

      Benchmark: Sand wood surface to specified smoothness and consistency

    3. Drill (Electric)
      1. Locate and use proper size bit
      2. Using chuck key
    4. Drill (Battery operated)
      1. Identifying difference between Philip / slotted screws
      2. Using proper screw bits
      3. Benchmark: Remove and replace door handle and test for proper operation

    5. Hand miter box

      Benchmark: Measuring size for cutting one piece of picture frame and pounding 10 finishing nails

  3. Power Equipment
    1. Radial arm saw

      Benchmark: Measure specified length and cut board.

    2. Jointer

      Benchmark: Smooth one side of board

    3. Table saw

      Benchmark: True (cut to precise dimensions) all boards that have been joined and glue all pieces together

    4. Planer

      Benchmark: surface both sides of the board evenly

    5. Cutting pieces to finished size to assemble project
    6. Sand
    7. Apply finish
  4. Shop Project
    1. Identify desired project
    2. Get specifications and develop the design
    3. Apply some or all of the steps outlined in previous section
    4. Benchmark: Completion of project to specification agreed to by instructor and student
